Buyer questionAnswered from the China side
Alibaba vs AliExpress: the difference is not the interface. It is who you are dealing with.
Both marketplaces belong to Alibaba Group. Most comparisons focus on minimum quantities, shipping speed and prices. The deeper difference is the transaction: AliExpress is a product purchase, while an Alibaba order is negotiated with a company as your counterparty.
1. Identify the seller on either platform
AliExpress has sellers behind its listings. A retail checkout does not remove the need to check who supplies the goods. Save the listing, seller details and terms for the item you buy.
For a negotiated Alibaba order, match the legal seller to the quote, invoice and payment instructions. If a trading company handles the order, ask what role it has and which company takes responsibility. A different name needs an explanation, not an automatic fraud verdict.
For a mainland Chinese company, ask for its registered Chinese name and 18-character company code. Then use the registration check guide. A valid code format does not prove who controls the storefront.
2. Check the protection on your exact order
On AliExpress, read the refund, return and delivery terms shown for the item and destination. A service label is not a promise that every order has the same cover.
For Alibaba Trade Assurance, keep the agreed specification and dates in the order and retain Message Center records. Use the payment route specified by Alibaba, including its designated wire-transfer route when offered. A seller's separate bank instruction is not the same thing.
Check Trade Assurance coverage and claim deadlines before paying. Clear terms and saved evidence help you explain a dispute; they do not guarantee a refund.
3. Plan for the problems your order could face
- Wrong, late or missing goods: save the promised specification, delivery date, tracking and photos of what arrives.
- A sample that differs from the bulk order: agree the sample version, tolerances and inspection plan before production.
- A changed payment account: confirm it through a trusted contact route before paying. See the scam-response guide if a request looks suspicious.
These problems can occur on either marketplace. We have no comparable loss-rate data to rank one as safer. Consider the money, time and business disruption at stake in your own order.
4. Compliance moves, and nobody announces it
A retail purchase arrives as a consumer good and the seller has generally dealt with getting it to you. A wholesale order is different: when you import a production run, you are the importer. Market-specific requirements, CE, FCC, labelling, product safety, customs classification, sit with you, not with the seller who priced the goods for whichever market they usually serve.
EU buyers face a recent change here: since 1 July 2026 a flat €3 customs duty per product category applies to parcels under €150.
This catches people who scaled up from ordering samples on AliExpress to a container on Alibaba. The product looked identical. The obligations were not, and they transferred silently at the moment the order became an import.
5. Where 1688 and other marketplaces fit
Alibaba Group's official profile describes 1688 as an integrated domestic wholesale marketplace with more than one million paying members in fiscal year 2024. That source does not state what checks attach to 诚信通 or any specific seller membership or badge.
For an overseas 1688 order, confirm the payment route, shipping, return terms and any agent's role. Compare the whole delivered cost; a lower listing price does not establish a saving.
In our 28 August 2026 study, the company-code field appeared on 59 of 59 1688 factory cards; 43 held a code that passed the format check. It was absent from the 33 Alibaba profiles read. The study also used two control profiles. Fields were found in page data; they were not necessarily visible on screen. This does not describe all sellers or platform checks. Read the sample and limits.
Considering DHgate, Made-in-China or Global Sources? Compare the actual seller, specification, quantity and order terms. Switching sites does not itself verify a supplier.
Ask who will handle the export documents
Company data can help you ask about export roles, but a missing query result cannot tell you who cleared a shipment. We queried 45 companies from a selected NHTSA manufacturer sample through commercial data platforms on 21–22 August 2026.
| Query result | Companies |
|---|---|
| A record was returned | 41 of 45 |
| No record was returned | 4 of 45 |
No return does not prove that a company lacks export rights or uses another exporter. These are company-level query results, not shipment declarations or a comparison of marketplace sellers. Ask for the roles and documents for your actual order.
Choose by specification, quantity and total cost
- A few finished items: compare the AliExpress listing with ready-stock offers elsewhere. Check delivery and returns before ordering.
- A custom product or branded batch: request written quotes with the same specification, sample and inspection requirements.
- Business orders from AliExpress: confirm the invoice, product documents and repeat-supply terms you need. A successful sample order does not prove bulk capability.
Neither platform is always cheaper. Add goods, samples, tooling, freight, import charges and any agent fees before comparing. See the MOQ guide if a quote requires more units than you need.

How we checked
Candidate figures come from running real supplier names through our own lookup and recording how many candidates came back and where the intended company sat. Platform statistics come from reading the subject fields on a stated number of live storefront pages on the date shown. Fill rates come from running our report process on real companies and counting how many of the twelve dimensions returned data on the date stated. The most recent query date on this page is 28 August 2026. Where a table carries its own date, that date governs.
The official pages we read are listed on this page with the date each was accessed, so every figure can be re-checked at source.
Checking a named Chinese seller? Compare the licence, seller, invoice and payee names free in your browser. This does not verify account ownership.
For additional company records, the report menu offers five selected checks from $26.55. Review the scope, total and delivery window before paying. Records do not inspect goods or negotiate an order.
