Buyer questionAnswered from the China side
Verified Supplier, Gold Supplier: what each badge establishes, and where it stops.
The practical question behind these badges is whether they are enough to justify payment. They involve more checking than sceptics often claim, but cover less than a profile page may imply. The remaining gap is the identity of the entity on your contract, invoice and payment.
1. The tiers, read precisely
- Gold Supplier is a paid annual membership, and Alibaba’s buyer guide says the business is verified as legally registered by a third-party institution. That is a real registration check. Its published scope does not assess the product or your specific order.
- Verified Supplier is the broader, also-paid tier. Independent third-party institutions assess, certify and/or inspect the company profile, management, production capabilities, product and process controls, including through on-site verification. This is broader third-party work, not a guarantee of a specific order.
If you take one distinction away: Gold answers “has a third party verified that this business is legally registered?”; Verified adds broader assessment of the company and its production operation. Neither answers “will this order go well”, because neither was assessing your transaction.
The profile fields behind a badge also differ by platform. Our 94-profile measurement found the registered Chinese name on every 1688 profile but on zero Alibaba.com profiles sampled.
2. Two structural limits that apply to both
- Read the assessment date. A report describes what was checked at that time. Ask about changes to the company, site or production process that affect your order.
- Match the scope to your order. Seller membership includes the stated third-party checks. It does not replace an inspection of your product or an assessment you commission for this transaction.
3. Match the assessed company to your order
The assessed factory and the seller on your invoice may be different companies. An export agent or related trading company is one possible explanation; a mismatch alone does not prove fraud.
Compare the assessment report, contract, invoice and payment instructions. Ask for a written explanation of different names and check each company involved. For a platform payment, use the instructions in the order. See how to check the seller and payment beneficiary.
What company records can add
Company records offer another way to check identity and recorded status. Our commercial data queries for 45 manufacturers from the NHTSA list returned these record types on 21–22 August 2026.
| Record | Present for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Legal form and status | 45 of 45 | Recorded company identity and status |
| Annual reports | 44 of 45 | Filing year and reported information |
| Qualification certificates | 36 of 45 | Issuer, scope and expiry |
| Import/export credit record | 41 of 45 | Record type, entity and date |
| Platform badge | — | Assessment scope and date |
A returned record does not prove that every field is complete or current. Check the source and date of each entry. Import/export credit information alone does not establish shipment history or permission for your product.
Use the assessment report for the work it documents and company records for the identity and status they record. Neither guarantees product quality, payment safety or performance on your order.
The same 45 companies appear throughout this site — one batch that I keep asking different questions; the batch itself is described in the NHTSA manufacturer study. We have not evaluated any badge programme’s methodology and make no claim about its quality.
4. How to actually use badges
Use the badge to find the underlying assessment, then decide whether it answers your questions.
Before paying a shortlisted supplier:
- Ask for the business licence and the assessment report. Confirm which company will sign your order.
- Check the 18-character Unified Social Credit Code — the structure and check digit can be verified in your browser, no account needed.
- Use the free in-browser scope screen to identify wording to ask about. It cannot verify a licence, factory capability or product approval.
- Check current registration status through the company registration guide. A valid code format alone does not prove the company exists.
If you need help reading company records, request a check with named sources and query dates. That service does not replace the assessment report or a product inspection.
This page describes how platform badge programmes and public records work. It is not legal advice, and nothing here is a judgement about any particular seller. Badge definitions checked against Alibaba Buyer Central’s supplier definitions and the official Verified Supplier programme page. Accessed 12 August 2026; definitions rechecked 6 September 2026. How we checked
Candidate figures come from running real supplier names through our own lookup and recording how many candidates came back and where the intended company sat. Platform statistics come from reading the subject fields on a stated number of live storefront pages on the date shown. Fill rates come from running our report process on real companies and counting how many of the twelve dimensions returned data on the date stated. The most recent query date on this page is 28 August 2026. Where a table carries its own date, that date governs.
The official pages we read are listed on this page with the date each was accessed, so every figure can be re-checked at source.
Being pushed to pay a deposit right now? The checks that matter before money moves take about ten minutes and cost nothing.
If you want these records pulled for your own supplier: the “Just check who they are” selection of the report menu covers them, packs from $26.55. Delivery follows the window on your order confirmation. Buying from a Chinese seller of record is the other route entirely. Its own choice, its own trade-offs.
