Buying an ebike from Alibaba: the checks the forum threads skip.

1. Why an ebike order is not a phone-case order

Three properties stack the risk differently from ordinary Alibaba purchases:

One number is worth knowing before you rely on an English name. When I searched all 106 Chinese manufacturers on a US regulator's list by their English names, 42.5% returned nothing at all. The full search-outcome study shows what came back and why.

Before the compliance questions, settle the entity question. This frame is drawn from vehicle manufacturers a US regulator had already listed, and even there 42.5% of name searches came back empty. A category with certification obligations is a category where the certificate-holder’s identity has to be nailed down first.

• The price sits in wire-transfer territory. A $1,500–$4,000 order is too small for lawyers and escrow structures, large enough that a wrong payee is a real loss. That is exactly the band where the changed-bank-account pattern does its damage.
• The product is certification-bound. An ebike is a lithium battery you keep in your home. The electrical system has a reference standard: UL 2849, covering battery, charger and drivetrain as a system, and batteries are separately certified to UL 2271. New York City’s Local Law 39 has required certification to these standards for devices sold there since September 2023, with the certification displayed at sale. Certification is not a nice-to-have line in a listing. It is paperwork with a named holder, and the name is checkable.
• You are a one-time buyer. A sourcing agent spreads risk across fifty orders and visits factories. You get one order, no visit, and no second chance at the deposit. That inverts the advice: the cheap, remote, before-payment checks matter more for you, not less.

2. First name: the registered company behind the storefront

A storefront is an account. A company is a registered record. The record is where your questions get answered, and reading it is mostly free:

• Get the exact Chinese name and the 18-character code. Ask for the business licence, then read it for the Unified Social Credit Code and never the English brand. English names are aliases, and the legal identity chain runs through the code.
• Check the record is current and never the photo. A licence photo proves what was registered when the paper was produced; 54.9% of manufacturers I measured amended their registration within 12 months. Status must read 存续 or 在业 (active): a revoked company still holds a normal-looking licence.
• Read the scope for what the company was drafted to do. The free in-browser screen reads manufacturing wording against trading wording from the licence text you already hold. A trading company selling you an ebike is not a scam. It is a different counterparty with a different relationship to the factory warranty.

3. Second name: who actually holds the certificate

Listings say “UL/CE certified” the way they say “high quality”. The checkable version is different: a certificate is issued to a named holder for specific models. So the questions are mechanical:

• Ask for the certificate document itself: standard number, certificate number, holder name, model list. “We can provide certification” after payment is a no.
• Compare the holder’s name with your contract seller’s registered name. Same entity? An affiliate you can see in the record? Or a name with no visible relationship to anyone in your deal? The third case is where “certified” quietly means someone else’s certificate.
• Check the model on the certificate is the model on your order: a certificate for one battery pack does not cover the bigger pack the storefront upsells.

Boundary: we read registered records and compare names. We do not test products, and a matching name does not make a battery safe or a product compliant. Whether a given certificate satisfies your market’s rules is a question for the certificate body and your local regulator: what the China side can establish is whose paperwork it is, which is the part storefronts blur.

4. Third name: the account that receives your money

This is where the expensive failures happen, and the pattern is documented. The deal is real, the supplier is real, and the payment instruction that arrives by email names an account that belongs to neither. The payment check and the bank-account check walk through it. The ebike-specific summary:

• The beneficiary name must match the contract seller: or come with a written, signed explanation of the relationship at quotation stage. A factory exporting through an affiliate is ordinary. An explanation arriving only with the payment instruction is not.
• Treat any mid-deal change of account as a stop event. Re-confirm through a channel you opened, not by replying to the email that delivered the change.
• Personal accounts for company invoices are a hard no at this order size, whatever the stated reason.

If the worst already happened. You paid and the supplier says nothing arrived: move in the order set out here: bank recall first, evidence second, then establish who you actually paid.

5. The sequence, condensed

• Licence → code → live company registration record (free, minutes)
• Scope reading with the in-browser screen (free, seconds)
• Certificate document → holder name vs seller name vs model (free, one email)
• Beneficiary name vs contract seller, in writing (free, one email)
• For a four-figure order: a dated China-side record check or menu-priced registry lines: enforcement records, litigation signals and change history on the entity you are about to pay, each line with its source and query date
• Independent pre-shipment inspection before the balance: scoped here

How many Chinese companies could plausibly quote you an ebike

Shortlisting on a marketplace feels like choosing among a handful of suppliers. How big is the pool the listings are drawn from? On 22 August 2026 we searched the Chinese company register by name ending and counted.

Three of the four searches stopped at the register’s display ceiling. The pool behind an ebike listing is at minimum several thousand companies, and the register will not tell us how much larger. Nothing about that is a warning. It is a functioning industry. But it does dispose of one instinct: a company existing, being registered, and having a name that matches its product line distinguishes it from nobody.

It also reframes what a shortlist is. You are not choosing the best of five. You are choosing five out of thousands using whatever the platform surfaced. The checks on this page matter precisely because the selection that got you here carried almost no information.

Counts name endings, not certified capability: firms without these words may build excellent ebikes and many with them assemble or trade instead of manufacture. No company is named or recommended.
