Buying from Taobao? Check the item and the shop.

Choose the exact item and ask who operates the shop before requesting a quote. From this page on, we are a seller. We take title to the goods and invoice you directly, subject to capacity for each defined order.

01

How to order from Taobao when a listing is not yet an order

A listing can change its options, price or stock. Save the exact size, colour, material and quantity you want. Taobao reviews may describe a different variant or a single consumer purchase; they do not establish that your whole order will meet its specification.

Add the acceptance requirements, destination country and decision date. Include any required tolerance, certificate or material in writing. We use this brief to assess whether we can quote the order.

02

Five decisions before goods move.

  1. Fit: we decide whether we can quote the request as seller and decline categories or requirements we cannot support.
  2. Counterparty: we read what the shop publishes about its own registration and tell you which of the two categories below it falls into. This is a record check on a shop you already chose, not a shortlist and not a recommendation.
  3. Baseline: before payment, both sides agree the product, price basis, hand-off point, evidence, cancellation and refund terms in writing.
  4. Payment: Payment clears before goods move. We do not extend credit, net terms or purchase-order financing.
  5. Freight: A domestic Taobao listing does not establish that export carriage is included. Our quote states whether we can book export carriage to the destination you named. If accepted, it also states the carrier charge, tracking arrangement and your responsibility for import clearance.

Check the first-order limits below before setting your quantity.

03

Taobao international shipping, duty and credit: what stays outside

We do not guarantee transit time or act as carrier. We book export carriage and pass the carrier’s charge through at cost, but the schedule, handling and liability limits are the carrier’s, not ours.

We do not calculate customs duty. Product classification, import clearance, destination tax and regulatory approval remain with you and your appointed specialists.

We do not finance purchases. We do not extend credit, advance supplier funds for you or carry inventory on your behalf.

We keep selling separate from checking. We will never verify a supplier for you and then offer to replace them with ourselves. If you need an independent record check, use the verification service. It does not recommend us or another supplier.

04

What Taobao is, and what its sellers are required to publish.

Alibaba Group says Taobao was founded in 2003 and describes it as China’s leading retail e-commerce platform. That describes the platform, not the identity or capability of a particular shop.

The Measures for the Supervision and Administration of Online Trading, amended in 2025, set disclosure rules for registered operators and those relying on an exemption. They do not establish whether a particular shop complies.

Four disclosure rules to check against the shop. Rule text checked 6 September 2026, using the 2025 amended version.
ArticleWhat it requiresWhat it gives a buyer
8 Online business operators must register as market entities, except where the E-Commerce Law exempts them. For small-scale individual trading, the ceiling is RMB 100,000 of annual turnover. Activities requiring a licence still require registration. Under Article 8, where one operator runs several shops on the same marketplace or across different marketplaces, their turnover is added together. This is one exemption, not a rule covering every unregistered operator.
12 A registered company must display, continuously and prominently, its unified social credit code, name, entity type, legal representative, domicile and registered capital: or a link to them. An operator relying on the exemption must publish a self-declaration saying so instead. Request the identity fields or the stated exemption. Other entity types have different field lists.
24 The platform must verify and register seller identity information, and re-verify and update it at least once every six months. This duty does not prove when a particular shop was last checked.
27 Platform operators must distinguish, in a prominent manner, operators that have completed market-entity registration from those that have not, so consumers can tell them apart. The line is meant to be visible on the marketplace itself: if you can reach and read that interface.

A missing visible licence does not prove which explanation applies. The operator may rely on the RMB 100,000 exemption, may be non-compliant, or the disclosure may be inaccessible from the interface you can reach. Ask for the registered name or credit code and resolve the entity before payment.

A published code still needs to be matched to a record. Registration does not prove product quality, stock or authority to supply your order. Article 24 does not guarantee that the displayed details are current.

The free USCI checker checks code format and the check digit. The payment-party checker compares contract, invoice and bank names. Both run in your browser without uploading the inputs; neither proves identity or retrieves a record.

For a dated record and its limits, see the verification service. It recommends no supplier and can also be used to check this desk.

How we checked

Legal thresholds are quoted clause by clause from the published regulation, with the article number and the reading date. The most recent query date on this page is 6 September 2026. Where a table carries its own date, that date governs.

The official pages we read are listed on this page with the date each was accessed, so every figure can be re-checked at source.

Reading the shop is half of it. The specimen order shows the other half.

COMMON QUESTIONS / 06

What people search for about buying on Taobao

What is a Taobao agent, and do I need one?
An intermediary who buys a domestic Chinese listing on your behalf and forwards it. You need one when you cannot contract with the named seller, make the required domestic payment or resolve Chinese-language listing details yourself. This desk is not that: we sell as principal rather than acting for you.
How do I pay on Taobao from outside China?
Taobao is a consumer retail marketplace settling in renminbi domestically, so most overseas buyers cannot pay it directly. That constraint, rather than the price, is what usually puts an intermediary in the middle.
How do I know who the Taobao seller actually is?
China's online trading measures require an online business operator to display its own details on the main page where it does business. Take the registered name and 18-character code from there, then check them against the public record.
