What can a Chinese business scope tell you?

The business scope (经营范围) lists registered activities. Read the full text, then ask where your goods will be made and who runs that site.

01

What is the business scope?

The 经营范围 is a registration matter: text the company filed with the market-regulation authority describing its registered activities. It appears on the business licence and in the company’s public record on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System.

China’s market-entity registration regulation lists the business scope among the general registration matters, alongside the name, entity type, address and legal representative. Changes to it must be registered, which is why a dated live record beats an undated screenshot.

02

What can it tell you?

Read the full scope. 生产, 加工 and 制造 refer to production, processing and manufacturing. 批发, 零售 and 销售 refer to wholesale, retail and sales. Check whether the text limits or excludes an activity.

Use the wording to ask about the supplier’s role. A keyword count cannot confirm who makes the goods.

In 264 companies from three “Little Giant” list excerpts, 97.3% had manufacturing verbs and 96.2% had trading terms. We checked their scopes on 8 August 2026. These counts describe wording in that group; they do not test factory capability.

Missing records need follow-up

In our 21–22 August 2026 check, some fields returned no record for some companies. The group was 45 Chinese entities matched from the NHTSA manufacturer list. We did not audit their factories.

Registry dimensions by how often they return anything, 45 manufacturers. Queried 21–22 August 2026.

A field returning nothing leaves a gap. It does not show why the record is missing, whether a licence is required, or who exports the goods.

Enterprise type describes the legal form. It does not identify the producer. See how the 45 entities were selected.

03

What can it not tell you?

Manufacturing wording does not prove site control, equipment, staff or who will make your order. Ask for evidence tied to the named factory and your product.

The scope also says nothing about product quality, compliance, delivery reliability or payment safety. Those need separate, order-specific evidence.

04

Get a dated copy of the scope

Open the official registry, search the supplier’s exact Chinese legal name or 18-character Unified Social Credit Code, and copy the 经营范围 line from the live record. Note the query date. The record can change.

The full walkthrough, including fuzzy-search pitfalls and no-result handling, is in our registration guide.

05

Go beyond the wording signal

Match the legal entity to the claimed site. Then check the process, certificate scope and fit for your order. If you cannot access a record, keep that gap visible.

Method and limits

We compared registered wording and record availability in separate groups. These were record checks, with no matched trader group or factory visits.

In a separate 46-entity study on 28 August 2026, 13.0% had trade terms without production terms; none had production terms alone. This does not prove that the first group only trades. See the 46-entity method and results.

This guide does not assess your supplier, product or transaction. A record check cannot replace a factory audit or product checks.

The registration regulation was checked again on 5 September 2026. Use a dated record for the specific entity; no supplier record was queried for this update.

Frequently asked questions

What is the business scope (经营范围) on a Chinese company registration?

It is the text a company files to describe its registered activities. It appears on the business licence and public record. Check the full text and query date.

Can the business scope tell me whether a supplier is a factory or a trading company?

It shows registered activities. Production and sales terms help you ask about the supplier’s role, but cannot confirm who makes the goods. Read the full wording, including exclusions.

Does manufacturing wording prove the company makes my order itself?

No. You still need evidence of the production site, process and capacity for your order. The supplier may outsource production.

Is trading wording a bad sign?

No. A trading company can arrange supply from a factory. Ask who will make the goods and who is responsible for quality and delivery.
